Science (our school creek)

Science

As part of our learning about where we are and our local environment we are studying our school creek.

We have started by making a survey of the things we notice about our creek.

Here are our findings so far.

Date 21st May

How many pieces of rubbish?  20

How many eels? 0

How many ducks? 0

How deep was the water (under the school bridge)? 35mm

What did the water look like? clear

There are a lot of weeds growing by our creek. We will think of a plan to get rid of them.

The water is surprisingly clear. It just looks brown because of the mud at the bottom.

Thank you Mikaire from Te Ngahere class for helping us get a water sample and measure the depth.

  3. Hi Te Awa, its Jade from Te Ngahere. I really like your blog post because it amazed me that there was 20 pieces of rubbish in the river and there are no eels or ducks in the river. Another thing that amazed me was that the river is only 35 centimeters deep. I haven’t done any work around the river in a long time but I would like to because I find the river very fascinating. What else would you like to learn about?
    Bye!

  4. Kia Ora Te Awa, this is Jaelyn - Marie from Te Ngahere. I really like your blog post because you have made a survey of all the amazing things you found out about our school creek. What I learnt from your blog post is that our school creek is 35mm and that the school creek is not dirty it is just the mud from the bottom of the creek. I also learnt more but it would be like writing a novel.
How did you find out that our school creek is clear?

  5. Kia Ora Te Awa I am Savitri a year six student from Te Ngahere. I really liked your post on our school creek. The first finding which made me surprised is that there were 20 pieces of rubbish in the creek that's quite a lot of rubbish. The other finding that surprised me is the depth of the water that is 35mm which I thought it would be more than that, looking from the top.

Which tool did you use for measuring the depth of the water?

  6. Kia ora Te Awa, it’s Marley from Te Ngahere. I really love this blog post about our school creek. It’s amazing how much rubbish you found, (that really dangerous for the eels though.) I also can’t believe how shallow the water was
compared to how it looks from the top.

What is the next thing you are going to do to the creek?
